Clients rarely ask for your certificate first. They ask: what have you built? A strong portfolio is the fastest way to prove your skill, even if you have never had a paying client. Here is how to build a web design portfolio as a beginner.
What to include
- 3 to 5 strong projects are better than 15 weak ones.
- A mix of types: for example a business site, a simple online shop page and a personal or portfolio site.
- Mobile and desktop screenshots so clients see it works everywhere.
- A short story for each project: the problem, what you did and the result.
No clients? Create your own projects
- Redesign the website of a local shop, clinic or academy as a practice project (clearly mark it as a concept).
- Build a site for a friend’s or relative’s small business.
- Make a landing page for an imaginary product.
Where to show it
Put your best work on your own simple website, then share it on LinkedIn, Instagram and your freelance profile. Make it easy for a visitor to contact you from every page.
Common mistakes
- Showing only screenshots with no explanation.
- Using copied designs. Clients can tell, and it hurts trust.
- Slow, cluttered pages. Keep your own site fast and clean.
